Ducati Streetfighter 848

The Streetfigher 848 makes use of the Testastretta 11 engine powering the 848 EVO supersport, which should deliver class-leading power in the current middleweight naked class.
Ducati expands its naked street bike lineup with the 2012 Streetfighter 848. The Italian manufacturer makes official the long-rumored Streetfighter addition with the release of its first press photos.

Ducati confirms its new Streetfighter will source the 848 Testastretta 11 engine found in the 848 supersport. The Ducati 848 EVO powerplant turned the MotoUSA dyno up to 119 rear wheel horsepower and 63 lb-ft torque during our 2011 Supersport Shotout. Those 848 EVO power stats figure to drop slightly, however, as Ducati says of the L-Twin that it has “enriched its user-friendliness with a smooth and flexible power delivery.”

Even reckoning a dip in peak power numbers for street-friendly tuning, the 848 Streetfighter figures to outclass current middleweight naked rivals, like the BMW F800R and Yamaha FZ8 – neither of which crested 100 hp or 60 lb-ft when tested during our 2-3-4 Middleweight Street Bike Comparison.

Spec sheet details are fleeting, though the 848 Streetfighter will employ more street-friendly ergonomics than its supersport kin. The Ducati-standard steel trellis frame is visible, along with components like an adjustable inverted fork and radial-mount Brembo brakes. The chassis rolls on Diablo Rosso Corsa tires.

Ducati’s 848 news release corroborates the bike will utilize Ducati Traction Control, following the electronic lead of all Ducati’s latest street offerings like the Multistrada and Diavel.

The new 848 is promised to be in the hands of the American Ducatisti by January of 2012. It will be available in the traditional Ducati red, but also a yellow colorway and a third matte-black option.

Ducati figures to follow this 848 release with an updated 2012 version of its larger-displacement Streetfigher. The larger bike will utilize the extra 100cc displacement of Ducati’s current Superbike engine, potentially dubbed the Streetfigher 1198.

We will get to know the new Ducs a little bit better later this month at the international launch in Italy. Check back September 30th for our First Ride evaluation.
